Gradual vs. Sudden Views of Ascension – Part 1 – Matthew Ward

Readers have asked about what appears to be a disconnect between the views of Matthew Ward and those of others like SaLuSa and Archangel Michael on what is expected to occur on Dec. 21, 2012.
In responding, I should note that not only are there differences between these three, but there are also differences between these three and many others who say that the planetary shift will not occur for many years after 2012.
I won’t be examining those who say that Ascension will not happen until 2016 or 2050, whose version I don’t prefer. I’ll restrict my attention to those who see the Ascension process starting or culminating on or around Dec. 21.
The views of these two groups can be characterized as “gradual” versus “sudden.”
What I propose to do in this series of articles is present Matthew’s “gradual” view today and then present the “sudden” group’s views on the following days.
Matthew said in February 2009 that by the end of 2012 all darkness would be gone from the planet. My own understanding is that entry into the Fourth Dimension will bring that end to all darkness.
“Earth’s ascension—the process of world transformation and spiritual renewal that enables her to rise out of third density and continue
into the Golden Age—has been ongoing for about seventy years in linear
time; and by the end of your calendar year 2012, the darkness that has
proliferated for millennia will have disappeared in all its vicious
forms.” (1)
He said in September of that same year that the arrival of Dec. 21 isn’t a final event that somehow ends forever the process of change and evolution.
“The arrival of the popularized date of
December 21, 2012, does not mean that Earth humankind will have entered
an era of complacent stability. The only constant in the universe is
change! Not only will marvelous developments continue in all areas of
your world, but spiritually and intellectually, you will continue to
grow through innumerable physical lifetimes, some in worlds where life
will exceed even the glories of Earth’s Golden Age.” (2)
This is a standard statement of the process of spiritual evolution. In fact we’ll indeed progress through higher and higher dimensions of spiritual growth on our return journey to God. (3)
On Feb. 14, 2010, he said that people will not disappear into their own timelines on Dec. 21. This statement does disagree with what Archangel Michael says, as we shall see, who suggests that those who ascend will in fact disappear from Third Dimensionality at least. (We’ll come to that in a later part of this series.) I’ll take some care in going through Matthew’s treatment of the subject.
“It will not happen on December 21, 2012
or any other date that you will be standing beside two others and before
your very eyes, they will disappear into their own ‘timelines.’ Even
the usual date of December 31, 2012, will be much like the previous and
the following days—that is, except for New Year’s Eve celebrations. The
differences between life in this moment and in the Golden Age will be
amazing and magnificent, but life will not differ dramatically from one
day to the next as Earth continues on her journey through fourth density
and on into fifth.” (4)
This might be considered a statement of the gradual view of Ascension: “Even the usual date of December 31, 2012, will be much like the previous and the following days. … Life will not differ dramatically from one day to the next as Earth continues on her journey through fourth density and on into fifth.”
Matthew goes on to state:
“Understandably, there is a great deal
of speculation about what will happen to whom at the end of 2012. There
is no definitive answer because what happens to each soul will be in
accordance with the uniqueness of each soul.” (5)
Starseeds can certainly appreciate this comment, since many of us hail from dimensions higher than the Fourth and Fifth and may return to them after the process of Ascension begins or is completed – depending on whose view you prefer. But some souls will devolve into lower-density placements as well, as Matthew discusses here.
“There will be souls whose lifetime
choices automatically will take them to first or second density
placements; and at the other end of the spectrum are the souls who came
from fourth, fifth and higher density worlds specifically to assist
Earth in her ascension—when their mission is completed, they will return
to their homelands.” (6)
He then aligns with the view that there will be no presence of the Earth continuing in Third Dimension, or Third Density as he prefers to call it. He refers to this as “the ‘two Earths’ theory.”
“However, we can say with certainty that
the theory of a celestial body appearing as a ‘second Earth’ and
becoming the third density home for souls who do not physically
accompany the ‘first Earth’ into fourth density is erroneous. You are a
soul in a human body. Earth is a soul in a planetary body.
“Her soul remained in its fifth density
origin while her body spiraled into deep third density during the
millennia that her human residents were shedding each others’ blood,
mass-slaughtering her animals and severely damaging her body. She could
have chosen to let her assaulted body die, but instead she chose to have
its health restored so all of her residents in their myriad life forms
could continue.
“Moreover the ‘two Earths’ theory
accommodates only the people whose lifetime choices would place them in a
different third density world.” (7)
So Matthew has stated the view before that he offers in his Sept. 1, 2012 message. Let’s now look at what he says in that post.
He states first that we will indeed travel through a “celestial window” at the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013. The window will bring us into what he calls “fourth density.”
“During its last days and the early days
of 2013, the planet will travel through the celestial window between
third and fourth densities, where the energy wisps of both densities
briefly comingle, and it will enter fourth density, where Earth’s Golden
Age begins.” (8)
This entry into Fourth Density, to use his term, marks the beginning of the Golden Age, in Matthew’s view.
“But that glorious milestone is not the
end of her journey. Ascension will continue until the planet is securely
within fifth density, where Gaia originated in antiquity and so did her
planetary body. After eons of being in the low densities that were
commensurate with the collective consciousness of successive
civilizations, Gaia’s body will have returned home.” (9)
Finally comes the passage that I think has perplexed most readers. Matthew begins by saying “Earth’s exiting third density will be heralded throughout the lighted universe!” However, he adds,
“… knowing that this brilliant process
will continue for long years to come will prevent despondency from
befalling those who are expecting a dramatic event to occur on December
21st. When nothing of dynamic proportions happens that day or any other
in that same narrow timeframe, how sad it would be if those who are
counting on something spectacular become so depressed that they decide
at soul level to join the others who also choose not to remain on the
planet for different reasons.” (10)
So, first of all, Matthew has not said anything different here than he has said before. He offers a gradual view of Ascension, which he sees as a process that will not see anything “of dynamic proportions” happen on Dec. 21, no “dramatic event,” no sudden departure of people to other timelines, etc.
It isn’t that Matthew doesn’t use the word “Ascension.” He does. It’s more that he doesn’t hold with the notion that a sudden Ascension to Fifth Dimensionality will occur on a specific date, as he declares here on
Aug. 22, 2004:
“A date is not the issue—it is the
incoming vibrations that are increasing the pace of Earth’s ascension
into the fullness of fourth density that is of consummate interest and
significance.” (11)
So hopefully Matthew’s view has been fairly and substantially stated here: a gradual Ascension to fourth density, beginning with travel through a celestial window opening at the end of 2012 and continuing until we reach a secure presence in fifth density, but going on nonetheless forever after that until we return to the Creator.
I’ll now set about to gather material to present the alternate, “sudden” view of Ascension. In the end, which view you prefer will need to be up to you.

Gradual vs. Sudden Views of Ascension – Part 2 – SaLuSa
SaLuSa of Sirius
One could say that SaLuSa and Archangel Michael represent the view that Ascension will occur suddenly on Dec. 21, 2012 (or earlier), that we and the Earth will in fact disappear from Third Dimensionality and that we’ll ascend to Fifth Dimensionality.
SaLuSa tells us on June 9, 2012, that “the solar cycle was planned to complete in 2012.” (1) Furthermore, the end of the solar cycle, he explains, “allows for everyone to ascend.” (2)
On Apr. 18, 2011, he adds that “the solar cycle … will not result in the destruction of the Earth,” SaLuSa does hold that “a new Earth will arise with all souls that are ascending with it.” (3) “When Ascension takes place in 2012,” SaLuSa states, we will actually “lift up with the new Earth.” (4)
So SaLuSa does put forth the view that the Earth itself will lift up at the end of 2012 and we’ll go with it.
According to him, “ascension will place you in the fifth dimension or higher, which is far removed from the limiting vibrations you are now in.” (5) Moreover, this Ascension “applies to the whole Universe.” (6) The changes “are affecting … not just your solar system, but [the] Universe and Galaxy.” (7)
SaLuSa repeats the Ascension date of Dec. 21, 2012 on many occasions. On May 23, 2012, he tells us:
“At the time of the 21st December 2012,
the high energy influx due to the alignment of your Sun and the Great
Central Sun is going to ‘separate’ those who are ready to ascend, and
those who are not.” (8)
On Oct. 31, 2011, he calls “21.12.12 … a major upliftment.” (9) “It is for your civilization the opportunity to leave duality, and not continue re-incarnating in the lower dimension.” (10)
On Aug. 27, 2012, he reminds us that:
“Before you reach the 21st December many
opportunities will be given to those who are unaware of what is coming.
Also to those who have decided that they have no interest in leaving
your present Earth, so that they have no regrets afterwards.” (11)
On Feb. 24, 2012, he congratulates us on having a date we can agree on and align with: “That you have a date for the completion of this cycle is wonderful, as it means you have something to set your sights upon as you count the days that remain.” (12)
Not only does the Mayan calendar end on Dec. 21, 2012; SaLuSa tells us that a galactic alignment will occur on that day and be instrumental in bringing about Ascension:
“As things unfold this year you will see
plenty of proof in respect of our part in the build up to Ascension. It
is real and divinely decreed to take place with a high point due to the
powerful alignment on the 21st. December 2012. From thereon you will
continue to evolve into even higher dimensions, each one more beautiful
and peaceful than the one before.” (13)
On Jan. 20, 2012, he reminds us that the end of the Mayan Calendar on Dec. 21, 2012 is not the end of the world, but the beginning of a new age for humanity.
“Word of the year 2012 being an important
one is spreading, but unfortunately because the Mayan Calendar ends on
the 21st of December, it is being taken by some people as the end of the
world. That of course naturally evokes fear amongst you, but with the
coverage given by the Internet we feel that it will soon be understood
that the ‘end’ is but the beginning of a new cycle.” (14)
“[21.12.12 is] only the beginning of another cycle of experience,” SaLuSa reminds us. (15) It is part of “an ongoing process,” according to SaLuSa. (16) He explains what awaits us after Dec. 21.
“Your spiritual journey of many lives is
reaching its end where duality is concerned. However, it will still
continue [after] Ascension, and you will never stop learning as you make
your way through the higher dimensions. That will take you further
along your evolutionary path, until you reach the Source.” (17)
“As things unfold this year you will see
plenty of proof in respect of our part in the build up to Ascension. It
is real and divinely decreed to take place with a high point due to the
powerful alignment on the 21st. December 2012. From thereon you will
continue to evolve into even higher dimensions, each one more beautiful
and peaceful than the one before. (18)
Rather than the world end, it will keep evolving until we re-unite with our Creator.
“The world is not going to end and indeed
it must keep evolving, as that is the nature of All That Is. It cannot
stand still and is mystically attracted to the Source, where you will
finally reach the ultimate completion of the return journey. The Creator
draws all back into its Being, only to again commence further great
cycles of experience.” (19)
SaLuSa addresses those people who worry that there will be a delay or a change of plans around Ascension. On April 13, 2012, he said:
“[Ascension] is a tremendous change of
scope beyond your imagination, and involves Beings of unlimited power
and love. They carry out the Will of God and in that lies your assurance
that all will proceed according to the Divine Plan.” (20)
He tells us point blank that “nothing will stop the Ascension process from finally manifesting at the end of 2012.” (21)
SaLuSa’s colleague, Atmos, also assures us that, because it is “happening by divine decree, … we can confidently assure you that it will not be delayed. Why otherwise would we of the Galactic Federation be encircling your Earth, with millions of craft in readiness for First Contact and the restoration of Mother Earth.” (22)
As we reach the last days of the end times, SaLuSa sees all of us worrying about loose ends. He tells us:
“You are now in the last few months before the big day, and understandably some are questioning whether they should plan for the future beyond it. They ask about matters like investments or property ownership, and generally about lack and in many cases poverty.
We ask you to now take matters on a day to day basis, as very soon many problems that beset you now will have been solved by the planned changes. Abundance and prosperity will soon answer your various needs, and eventually you shall want for absolutely nothing at all.
“Much is to follow after Ascension, but
equally your desperate needs will be seen to as soon as possible We are
fully aware of what we need to do to make you happy and able to rest in
peace, by knowing that we are authorized to do so.” (23)
Thus, for SaLuSa, “the countdown to Ascension has started.” (24)
“The energies around the world continue
to build up, and are carried by the grid that is lifting up the Earth.
All is preparing for the final thrust of energy, that will propel it
into the new level of expression and out of duality. It will also
fulfill the promises of a new Age that will be unlike anything you have
experienced previously. and truly bring about a heaven upon Earth.” (25)
So SaLuSa is a proponent of the “sudden” view of Ascension. Ascension will happen on Dec. 21, 2012, he says, at the end of the solar cycle and the Mayan Calendar, when a high energy influx due to the alignment of our Sun and the Great Central Sun will separate those who are to ascend from those who are not.
On that day, we and the Earth will migrate to Fifth Dimensionality. Because this plan is seen to by great beings assisted by millions and millions of higher-dimensional galactics, nothing can delay or postpone the plan.
Where do Matthew and SaLuSa agree? That there will be an Ascension at the end of 2012, Matthew says to Fourth Density and then gradually on to Fifth; SaLuSa says to the Fifth Dimension all at once. Both agree that all darkness will end on the planet at that time. Both agree that everyone will be immeasurably served by the event and will leave the suffering of Third Dimensionality. And both agree that spiritual evolution will continue on past that date into the distant future.
As soon as possible, I’ll post Archangel Michael’s view of Ascension. Having considered both sudden and gradual views, you’ll then have what you need to make your own assessment and decide which version you prefer.

Gradual vs. Sudden Views of Ascension – Part 3 – Archangel Michael
(Continued from Part 2)
Now let’s look at the views of Archangel Michael expressed through Linda Dillon, Ronna Herman, Celia Fenn and Michelle Coutant. Archangel Michael puts out a “sudden” view of Ascension but cautions us that there are multiple dates on which people may ascend, Dec. 21, 2012 being one of them and the most important.
I think what’s stirred among lightworkers when they see apparently-different messages from respected sources is the fear that Ascension will not happen. Archangel Michael did not see a problem with multiple interpretations. In An Hour with an Angel on Sept. 3, 2012, he said:
“Do you not
think the heart of One can hold several perspectives at once? Of course
it can. But is there only one unfoldment and plan? Yes.
“Can there
be many interpretations of how that plan will come to be? Yes, because
it is influenced and in the hands of the human collective in tandem, not
solely, but in tandem with your star brothers and sisters, in tandem
with the Ascended Ones, in tandem with this Council and in tandem with
All.
“So it is not a matter of one view being accurate.” (1)
In a personal reading I had with him through Linda Dillon on Aug. 17, 2012, I asked him if there was any chance that the Plan for Ascension would be delayed and he replied: “This is the Mother’s Plan … [and] there is no plan for postponement or delay.” (3)
On two occasions, he addressed the fear that lightworkers have that Ascension will not happen. One was in the personal reading just mentioned. He asked me to:
“Talk about
this concern and fear that many are feeling about the ‘what if’ around
Ascension. Because … it is lurking in the shadows. …
“What if somehow this is all a cosmic joke?” (2)
He said that the Company of Heaven appreciates and loves jokes. But “our idea of a joke … would never be a joke to hurt so many. “ (3)
The second was in An Hour with an Angel on Sept. 3, 2012, when he stated categorically: “There is no ‘what if?’” He continued:
“The ‘what
if?’ is a fear that you are going to be let down. You say, ‘Yes, Lord,
that is true, because I have been let down, many, many, many times. You
have given us predictions and they have not come to pass. You have given
us dates, and they have not come to pass. Am I on a fool’s errand?’” …
“We are not putting the brakes on. We are not about to say to you, ‘Well, there has been a change in the Divine Plan.’
“We have
waited for eons. There has been alignment on more levels, in more
realms, than you can imagine for this to unfold. It is not simply about
whether you, individually, are ready. You were ready the moment you said
to the Mother/Father, ‘I will go, I will help, and my purpose is to
ascend.’ And you will do so.” (4)
Nonetheless, AAM himself did describe planetary Ascension as happening in a sudden shift on or before Dec. 21, 2012, landing us in the Fifth Dimension. I’ll discuss the date and dimension below, but first I’d like to look at his description of the “sudden” moment of Ascension:
“There is a
moment when the door opens. So it has been and is a gradual awakening.
You have seen the changes mentally, physically, emotionally;
interconnectedness; the shift in the collective. But there is that
moment when it clicks. … Actually, it is a period of about 20 to 24, 26
hours. …
“It is a
change in the entire collective vibration within which Earth, Gaia and
everything upon it comes together. It comes together in a different
vibration. So it is not like going through a portal. …
“But there
is … what we think of as a moment, which for you feels more like a day
or so. There is a moment when it is harmonized all together.” (5)
Another way of seeing the crucial moment in which we ascend is to say that it is the moment when duality – or what Archangel Michael calls “either/or” – disappears from our minds.
“So that
sense of either/or, of what you traditionally have thought of as yes or
no, of duality, of polarity, is gone. It is the alignment. The entire
journey in this third-dimensional existence is reaching this place of
alignment, of placing yourself beyond the either/or. And when you are
doing that in this ascension process, it is like a Roman candle: off you
go.” (6)
I asked him if Ascension was a process where we get up physically and move to another location and he replied:
“No, you
don’t. Think of it as blinking. Have you ever blinked and the room seems
brighter all of a sudden? This happens all the time in your
meditation. It is like a blink. …
“In that
moment, what we are calling a moment, there is a choice. … And it can
happen instantaneously, because so many of you have laid the foundation —
do you want to be in the heart of one of love? Do you wish to be in the
higher frequency?
“In
the very last second, all they need to say is yes, and allow themselves
to be flooded by what you can think of as a tidal wave of energy that
will sweep the planet.” (7)
Even if we don’t get up physically and move to another location, the sense of our experience will be as if we flew upwards. In the reading I had with him, he called it “that movement of what you think of as going up the sacred spiral. That is the best analogy I can give you.”
In a later interview on An Hour with an Angel. He returned to this same image describing it as “the sense will be that you are flying upward.”
“It is a
physical sensation of movement. And a remembering, or a sensation of
remembering, that you have wings, or the ability to fly. So that is the
feeling of ascending up the sacred spiral.” (8)
So in actuality the change or shift doesn’t mean that we actually go through a portal or physically move in any way, but instead that the Earth and everything upon it comes together in a different collective vibration. But at the same time we do have the sensation of flying upwards. We feel as if we were flying even if we don’t actually fly. The distinction between actually flying and feeling as if we were is subtle.

Archangel Michael described the dislocation we would feel immediately after our shift to Fifth Dimensionality.
“There will
also be in that period, which can be moments or a few hours, [a
sensation] of feeling disassociated, that even if you were to open your
eyes, even if you were to look at a floor, you would see that it is
simply made of particles, subatomic particles, quantum particles, that
it is not solid. So you have begun immediately to have the real
sensation or vision of how things can be seen, and how they are seen,
maybe, from this side.
“So there
is a sense of unreality. Now, if you wish to make things solid, you will
just simply say that you want that, and it will appear. But the knowing
that that is simply a construct that you are creating already is there
in full consciousness. When you decide to open your eyes, how you see
the colors, the textures, the richness, the air, will be very different.
What you think of as your senses will be heightened, oh, at least a
thousand-fold.
“So, there
is a little adjustment. And we are with you, and we obviously take care
of that, because this is completely a joyous situation to be in. Think
of it as being spiritually orgasmic. It is the union of all.
“Then, you
will settle into this knowing, and of course that choice of physicality.
But also know that if you choose to keep physicality, immediately what
you have noted as, what we would call human aches and pains are gone.”

And how will Fifth Dimensionality strike us upon first arrival? AAM says what will strike us right away as a “place of love. It will be all of a sudden that the decisions, the actions, the existence, the form is love, and is from love, and is of love.” (10)
However, he adds, “the biggest shift is you no longer live or exist — you can visit, … but you do not live — within the third dimension.” (11)
The next point to establish is where we end up – whether we go to the Fourth Dimension or the Fifth or higher. Archangel Michael says we go to the Fifth and higher, depending on our state of evolution (Starseeds, for instance, will go higher).
In describing the upwards-seeming flight of Ascension, he called it “the elevator to the Fifth. And further, there will be some who simply choose to keep going [to dimensions higher than the Fifth]. But as a collective, that is the plan.” (12)
When I asked him on An Hour with an Angel, Sept. 3, 2012, he said: “Yes, the shift is into the fifth, and will continue — no, probably not in your lifetime — through to the seventh. (13)
What will those find who go to the Fifth? Will it be a blank slate? AAM replies:
“It is not
to say that you arrive in the fifth and it is a completely blank slate.
There will be what you need there. But what you desire, or need, or
believe you need, you will create. And the feeling, the belief that
density and structure is the foundation of existence will not be part of
that belief system, that reality.” (14)
The next question that concerns people is whether the Earth will remain in Third Dimension as a home to those who refuse to ascend or whether it will cease to exist. I asked Archangel Michael if any people would find themselves remaining on a Third-Dimensional Earth and he responded:
AAM: They will find themselves elsewhere.
S: And will they find themselves elsewhere as babies, or as they are now?
AAM: They will return home. They will return out of body.
S: To the astral planes?
AAM: Yes. And they will be counseled and then reassigned as they choose.
S: And there will be no one on this Earth? Or will this Earth exist?
AAM: Oh, no [that is, not in 3D], it will exist [in 5D]. (15)
So, no, the Earth will not exist in Third Dimensionality, but it will exist in Fifth Dimensionality.
When will all this happen?
In An Hour with an Angel, AAM said: “So are there dimensional shifts already underway? … Does this culminate at the end of your year? Yes.” He also said: “I will not be pinned down to an actual date and time” and he said that for two reasons. First he did not want us to postpone our preparations for it towards that time, he said.
”When you
are talking about a specific date, the reason that I am avoiding it is
because too many people in your collective become fixated on a date and
time. So we say this is not particularly…. Is this a moment in time that
is highly significant in terms of the shift? Yes. Do I suggest that you
wait until December 19th to get ready? No. Do I suggest that if you
arrive on December 22nd that you have missed the boat? No.” (16)
A second reason is that there are also opportunities for early Ascension and he did not want people to associate Ascension with only one date. He gave alternate dates for what I call “early risers” who are, in his words, “free to fly” or “take early exit” (17) through Celia Fenn and in interview with me in 2011. (18)
“[They]
will also have the ability to travel back and forth and communicate with
those still stuck in the Third. No, not in physical form, well, not in
physical as you think of it. But their reality will be completely
different. …
“ It is like when you see many of your star brothers and sisters, … they are visible, but they’re not completely present.” (19)
In my reading with him on Aug 17, 2012, he suggested that Ascension could be earlier than Dec. 21, 2012. (20) On Aug. 1, 2011, he asked me:
“Do we
want you to be wedded to a date? No. Do we say that the dates that have
been given are accurate and significant? Yes. If you were paralyzed, and
let us suggest that in many ways the collective has been paralyzed, if
you were paralyzed, and you were praying and praying and doing your
sacred practice, and meditating for healing, and you were given the date
of December 2012, would you be upset, dear friend, if it arrived in
September? I think not.
“So look to your dates, but at the same time we are asking deeply of you, keep an open mind to early arrival.” (21)
AAM agrees with Matthew Ward that the spiritual journey back to the Creator goes on long after this coming Ascension: “As spiritual growth is ongoing, continual and a sacred journey and path, all will continue, long after they have completed planetary ascension.” (22)
He encourages us not to think of it as having an end at all, but as an ongoing process: “As you have probably heard before, ascension is an ever-evolving, continuous, on-going evolutionary process and not a destination.” (23)
He gives us an idea of just how long the journey back to the Creator is.
“There are
many levels and stages of ascension: personal earthly ascension, whereby
you gradually balance and harmonize your chakra centers which in turn
triggers the process of clearing your physical vessel and your auric
field of discordant energies. …
“Ultimately,
we will experience the universal ascension process together. This phase
of ascension will take place in the far-distant future; however, we in
the higher realms of existence have had glimpses of this prodigious
cosmic event and, we assure you, it is so magnificently complex and
awe-inspiring that it is beyond your present comprehension.” (24)
He reminds Starseeds that “you have experienced different phases of the ascension process many times before in a multitude of locations and realities.” (25)
So Archangel Michael does say that a major Ascension will take place on Dec. 21, 2012, but he also refuses to pin himself down to just one date. Ascensions for some individuals – early risers or those who are free to fly and take early exit and for those who become ready after that date – exist prior to Dec. 21 and after. Ascension is not a fixed phenomena or an all-or-nothing affair but will accommodate both those who are fit to ascend before and those who become fit to ascend after.
He does say that we will ascend to the Fifth Dimension but he also adds that many will ascend to the Fifth, Sixth. Seventh, etc., and that those who ascend to the Fifth will be able to return and visit the Third.
And he does say that the moment of Ascension is sudden although the preparation is gradual.
